In its first year in operation Johannesen & Umana P.C. settled more than $4.1 million in personal injury cases, obtained non-incarceration sentences for defendants facing 16 count indictments, and obtained dismissals at the evidentiary hearing phase before having to pick a jury. To put things lightly, the coming together of attorneys Elizabeth Johannesen “Liz” & Luis Umana as partners CRUSHED it from the very start.
Since the inception of their careers, being placed in Trial Bureau 70 together at one of the top District Attorney's Offices in New York City, Liz & Luis became an unstoppable team. They ate lunch together everyday in Liz’s little cubicle (fondly referred to as "the cube"), suffered through night arraignment shifts, and even conducted misdemeanor trials together. The things they would do to go tell those young lawyer versions of themselves where they are now...
Thereafter, Luis went on to start an extremely successful personal injury career, gaining a specialty in medical malpractice and nursing home negligence matters, and tried cases to verdict across the NYC boroughs winning a $10 million verdict in Bronx County and a $6.2 million verdict in Queens County. Liz went on to start a similarly successful criminal defense and investigations practice where she handled cases at both the state & federal level and obtained dismissals on nearly every single one. In 2024, they put their brains back together and created Johannesen & Umana P.C., which pulls from their shared prosecutorial background and combined their different practice areas to successfully serve our clients unlike any other law firm.
They created their logo as a square out of two Ls- Liz & Luis— to symbolize the merging of two very different practices by two lawyers with unique skillsets, who harmonize the millennial & innovative pursuit of justice in one, holistic approach. In 2025, they look forward to fighting for their clients from every corner of that square.

Elizabeth Johannesen, Esq.
As a former prosecutor, investigative assistant, and attorney at a prominent boutique law firm in Manhattan, Elizabeth combines litigation and trial experience with investigations and crisis management experience. Elizabeth is a millennial trial attorney with an innate understanding of how to gather intelligence through digital presence and a knack for asking the right questions to the right witnesses to gather information for her clients.
Luis A. Umana, Esq.
Luis Umana practices all areas of general personal injury law, including more complex specialized areas of legal practice such as medical malpractice and nursing home negligence. Luis is a zealous advocate with several years of experience litigating a wide range of cases from inception to trial. Prior to entering private practice, Luis served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx where he prosecuted crimes involving DUI, weapon possession, and assault. He then went on to handle complex medical malpractice matters at a boutique Manhattan law firm, and eventually went on to lead the Medical Malpractice department at a prominent regional Plaintiff’s Asbestos and Toxic Tort firm.
